Christopher Graziul
Chris Graziul is a preceptor for the Digital Studies program in the Arts & Humanities Division at the University of Chicago. Prior to this role, he co-led sponsored research testing if it was feasible to study police behavior by analyzing the two-way radio communications used to coordinate officer activities. Chris previously studied off-label use of psychotropic drugs, urban political economy, and residential segregation before exploring how AI/ML tools could be used to study radio policing. His research finds this sociotechnical system introduces novel risks to members of the public, disproportionately affecting minoritized populations, and that current speech recognition models heighten these risks by catalyzing extraction of structured data from radio transmissions. He holds a PhD in sociology, a master’s in social science, and bachelor of science (BS) degrees in physics and mathematics.
